Noraini, one of my Lecturer in Faculty Science and Technologi UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia). This is an exciting experience when we can see the pollen grain of the flower.

According to Williams, 1994, palynology is a branch of science concered with the study of pollen, spores, and similar palynomorphs, living and fossil. in plant systematic it is useful for classification and identification/authentification. it also useful in forensic science, archeology, and pharmaceutical/medical-herbal.

In studying palynology, there are two methods to see the pollen and spores micromorphology. there are by using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and using the Light Microscope (LM). In this lecture, we used to choose one flower to be our project, and i choose Gardenia jasminoides for my project.

This is an introduction for Gardenia jasminoides :

<p:colorscheme colors="#ffffff,#292929,#808080,#000000,#cc9900,#cccc99,#999933,#b2b2b2"> </p:colorscheme>

Gardenia is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae. native to the tropical andsubtropical regions of africa, southern asia, australasia, and oceania.

The genus was named by Carolus Linnaeus after Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-1791), scottish born american naturalist

Common name: Cape Jasmine

Species skill level: experience

Exposure: Full sun, partiel shade

soil type: well drained/light

Height: 300 cm

Spreed: 200 cm

I study this flower under the SEM to know its size, types, the colpus and granul, the exine ornamentation and its aperture, I also use the LM to know its size and types. And this are the result I have got:

The pollen grain Under LM (Light Microscope):

Under the LM we can describe that the shape of the pollen is cirlular-oblate, the pollen class called tetrahedral tetrads, and the exine thickness is 2.11 micrometres.

I am so sorry can't upload the pollen grain image under the SEM, because the file is in TIFF and my blog only accept file in JPG or GIF, maybe in my next post. I used to change the file first.

But under the SEM we can describe the exine ornamentation, and the result for the exine are foveolate, rugulate, and perforate.

It is so exciting studying Palynology...

The Queen of the jungle”.

By : Kharisma (FST-UKM)
